AUDIENCE VIEWING PATTERNS IN THEATRICAL AND OTT

Audience viewing patterns in theatrical (cinema) and OTT (Over-The-Top) platforms have evolved significantly over the past few years. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly accelerated the shift towards OTT platforms as theatres were closed or operated at limited capacity. This period saw an increase in first-run movies being released directly on streaming platforms. The window between theatrical release and availability on OTT has shortened, sometimes to just a few weeks. And so has the humongous amount of money paid for the OTT rights. The current mantra is first released on theatrical and then to other platforms. What are some key trends and differences in these viewing patterns? How important is the theatrical window for a movie?
